Everyone loves receiving post, right? So why not make your own envelopes and make your snail mail as inviting on the outside as it is inside!
All you need is paper that's printed on both sides; and whilst you can buy gorgeous craft and origami papers for this DIY, it can also be a great way to recycle. Try newspaper/magazine pages, wrapping paper or even old book pages to add a personal touch.

1. To make your envelope you will need a square sheet of paper. If you have a rectangular sheet of paper, simply fold one short edge up so that it is parallel to the opposite long edge as shown. Make a mark at this point and cut off the excess paper.

2. With your square sheet of paper, gently fold it in half one point to another. Make a small and faint crease only in the middle - we don't want this crease to show on the finished envelope. You should be left with a small cross shaped crease in the middle of the sheet.
3. Fold two opposite points in to meet the cross shaped crease. Make sure the points are aligned properly, and then fold in place.
4. Next, fold the bottom point up with the tip finishing around 2cm above the other two points.
5. Do the same with the remaining top point, but with the tip finishing around 1cm below the first two points.
6. Open everything flat. Along each edge of the paper, you'll notice little triangles created by your fold lines. Snip these off to reduce bulk.
7. Fold the envelope back into place and glue together at the dashed lines.
Tip: You can cut the top and bottom tips into a curve, or even try a scalloped edge to stylise the envelopes even more.

ReplyDeleteNewspaper and some wrapping paper may not hold up going through the postal service sorting machines. heavy wrapping paper and magazine pages might work better.

DeleteThat's very true, it would depend on the quality of the paper used. I think with newspaper it would be fine if doubled up :)
